The Benefits Of Corporate Team Building

There are challenges with everything in life. This is especially true with teamwork and building a team. It is funny how people have the capacity to do the most extreme stuff on earth with their physical bodies, but many could not work with a group of people for more than one day. Why is that? It is because people are not constant like the rocks that can be climbed, or the water that can be surfed on. People are fluid – ever changing, ever in flux. That is why teamwork is not so easy as implementing policies and procedures. Companies can get some productivity done with good rules and strong accountability. But in environments like those, there will be no creativity, little longevity of employees, and definitely no “team spirit”. Companies who do not prioritize team building and a teamwork atmosphere will suffer in the long run. They will always be “maintaining” and “existing” and not “reproducing” through leadership development.

Teamwork requires a conscious effort of team building by its executives. The executives play a vital role in setting the tone and attitude team building. They must act like “coaches” to their managers. In the last number of years, the concept of “leadership coaching” has been very popular. Leadership coaching is more than just training or mentoring. Its core precept is that every person has qualities and gifts in them, and they must be “coached” to bring those out into the open. Leadership coaching allows executives and supervisors to be just like coaches in a football or basketball game. They encourage their players from the sideline and occasionally have a “time-out” to give instruction. But all of the time, they allow their “players” to do the actual work. They just observe in order to get knowledge to bring instruction or correction.

This kind of coaching is difficult for many managers to do. If they don’t see their subordinates doing the job – they get the job done themselves, and then simply reprimand their down-line. But for executives or managers to learn how to coach their employees, they need to see their people as their greatest asset, not just the sales, or the production. There is a delicate balance of course between the two. But companies that have diligently implemented the principles of leadership coaching in their team building have developed corporations that are innovative and reproductive. The challenges of teamwork and team building are always present. But let’s face it, anything worth much always takes an investment of time and effort. Companies must see the end-vision of a growing company with a team of committed people in order to overcome all those challenges.
